MONROVIA – The riveting battle for the position of House Speaker ensued in the Liberian legislature and has just ended with Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, a seasoned Liberian lawyer, triumphantly clinched the speaker post in the 55th National Legislature.
His victory was hard-fought, as he successfully fended off the support of incoming president Joseph Boakai for his opponent, Richard Koon from the Unity Party.
It was a closely watched election, Koffa secured his win with 36 votes to Koon’s 31, effectively rebuffing the influence of the incoming president in favor of his own candidacy.
This unexpected turn of events marked a significant setback for the incoming president, as his candidate didn’t emerge victorious despite his backing.
In his pledge to the lawmakers before his election, Koffa emphasized his commitment to inclusive governance and vowed to champion the agenda of the president-elect, Joseph Boakai. His promises resonated with the legislators as they cast their votes, resulting in a total of 67 lawmakers participating in the election.
