MONROVIA – President-elect Joseph N. Boakai of Liberia has demonstrated his commitment to prioritizing the country’s welfare by significantly reducing the budget for his upcoming inauguration. In contrast to his predecessor’s extravagant ceremony, Boakai has opted for a more modest approach.

The Inaugural Budget for Boakai’s inauguration has been set at $650,000, a noteworthy reduction of $250,000 compared to the $900,000 spent on outgoing President George Weah’s inauguration in 2018. Weah’s budget allocation included an exorbitant $278,250 solely for entertainment purposes.

Boakai’s decision to curtail the inauguration expenses reflects his determination to rescue Liberia from the challenges it has faced. By showcasing fiscal responsibility from the outset, he aims to set an example of prudent governance and address the concerns of the Liberian people.

Importantly, the reduced budget proposal submitted by Boakai’s transitional team has been approved by the defeated Weah administration, signifying a cooperative approach between the outgoing and incoming administrations.

The inauguration of President-elect Joseph N. Boakai and Vice President-elect Jeremiah K. Koung is scheduled for January 22, 2024. The event will take place at the Liberian Legislature, symbolizing the democratic transfer of power and the significance of governmental institutions.

The decision to downsize the inauguration ceremony carries significant meaning for the Liberian population. Weah’s previous $900,000 budget was widely criticized as wasteful and contributed to a perception of mismanagement during his six-year tenure. This left many Liberians feeling disillusioned and without hope for their country’s future.

Holding the inauguration at the Liberian Legislature on January 22, 2024, with both local and international attendees, will mark a momentous occasion. It will serve as the official handover of the keys to the Liberian Executive Mansion, affirming President-elect Joseph N. Boakai’s commitment to serving his country and pursuing a path of responsible leadership.
