Monrovia, Liberia – Rep. Matthew Joe of Grand Bassa County District #3, a member of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), has announced his decision to rescind his support for the resolution calling for the removal of Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Speaker of the 55th House of Representatives.
In a statement, Rep. Joe revealed that his initial endorsement of the resolution was driven by concerns regarding Speaker Koffa’s close ties to the Executive Branch, which he deemed unnecessary for the role. “The Speaker should not be a regime collaborator or aligned too closely with the Executive. Speaker Koffa was elected by the majority of CDC lawmakers to ensure an independent House of Representatives that provides checks and balances,” Joe explained.
He urged Speaker Koffa to prioritize the needs of ordinary Liberians and to uphold the interests of the CDC. “Speaker J. Fonati Koffa must remember that we are the ones who elected him to serve in this position; thus, he should be more critical of the Executive and work in the interest of the people of Liberia,” he stated.
Rep. Joe emphasized that while the resolution for the Speaker’s removal represented a significant legislative action, it was essential to adhere to due process as outlined in the Liberian Constitution. He referenced a past Supreme Court ruling emphasizing the need for constitutional compliance in such matters.
In light of recent developments, Rep. Joe commended Speaker Koffa’s initiative to conduct a comprehensive financial audit of the House, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability.
“I hereby announce the rescinding of my signature from the resolution calling for the removal of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and reaffirm my full support for Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa,” Joe declared. He confirmed his intention to participate in the upcoming session under the leadership of Speaker Koffa, recognizing him as the legitimate presiding officer of the House.
