Hon. Andrew Peters

MONROVIA – The National Identification Registry has been thrown into turmoil following the decision made by President Joseph Boakai to remove Mr. Andrew Peters from his position as Executive Director and appoint Dr. Edward Liberty as his successor. Mr. Peters has taken a stand against this move and has officially challenged his removal and the appointment of Dr. Edward Liberty.

As tensions rise within the organization, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and what steps will be taken to resolve the dispute between Mr. Andrew Peters and President Joseph Boakai. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

In this case, Andrew Peters, as the Executive Director of the National Identification Registry (NIR), is claiming that President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. wrongfully appointed Dr. Edward Liberty as the next Executive Director of NIR. Peters argues that according to the Act that established the NIR, the Board of Registrars has the legitimate right to appoint the Executive Director for a tenure of four years.

Peters also points out that he was unanimously endorsed and appointed to serve as the Executive Director through a resolution convened on June 22, 2023. Based on these facts, Peters has filed a writ of prohibition against President Boakai Sr. to challenge the appointment of Dr. Edward Liberty.

The Supreme Court will likely need to interpret the relevant provisions of the Act that established the NIR to determine whether the Board of Registrars indeed has the authority to appoint the Executive Director. Additionally, the Court may need to consider the legality of President Boakai Sr.’s appointment of Dr. Edward Liberty in light of the Act’s provisions and Peters’ previous appointment.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court will need to assess the legal arguments presented by both parties and make a ruling on the validity of Dr. Edward Liberty’s appointment as the Executive Director of the NIR in relation to the Act and regulations governing the appointment process.
