In a landmark decision that could reshape the political landscape of Liberia, the Supreme Court has invalidated actions taken by a faction of the House of Representatives aimed at unseating Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. This ruling, delivered on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, by Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, marks a critical juncture in the ongoing power struggle within the legislature and poses significant challenges for President Joe Boakai and his administration.

The Court’s ruling declared that the self-proclaimed Majority Bloc’s attempts to remove the Speaker were “unconstitutional” and a “flagrant disregard for constitutional order.” All decisions made by this group during unauthorized legislative sessions have been nullified, reinforcing the principle that legislative proceedings must include the duly elected Speaker presiding when present and capable.

“Any action or sitting of the majority bloc in which the elected speaker is not presiding despite being present is unconstitutional,” Chief Justice Yuoh stated from the bench, emphasizing the need for adherence to the Constitution. This decisive judgment not only restores Koffa’s position but also calls into question the legitimacy of the Majority Bloc’s actions.

However, the responses from some of President Boakai government officisls  have raised eyebrows. In the wake of the ruling, senior officials from the Unity Party, close to the President, took to social media to openly ridicule the Supreme Court’s decision. This reaction signals a concerning unwillingness on the part of the executive branch to acknowledge or enforce the ruling, raising fears of a constitutional crisis.

As tensions mount, ordinary citizens in Monrovia have begun organizing to assert their power and enforce the Court’s decision. Many believe that President Boakai must take immediate action to uphold the Constitution and protect the rule of law, or risk being swept away by the chaos that may follow. “He must save the state or perish with it,” said one resident, reflecting the sentiments of many who feel disillusioned by the current political climate.

The Supreme Court’s ruling has ignited a fervent discussion about the balance of power in Liberia and the responsibilities of elected officials. As the nation grapples with these developments, the path forward remains uncertain. Will President Boakai heed the Court’s ruling and work to stabilize the situation, or will his administration further entrench itself in defiance, risking greater unrest? The coming days will be critical as citizens and leaders alike navigate this pivotal moment in Liberia’s history.
