Monrovia – House Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa conducted a tour of the Capitol Building’s courtyard today. The Capitol Building houses the offices of lawmakers. The tour, coordinated with the Liberian National Police, aimed to establish proper security measures regarding access for staff and officials within the building.
During the tour, Speaker Koffa revealed that a staff member had been assaulted, prompting him to notify the police, who have agreed to assume responsibility for ensuring safety in the area.
The House of Representatives is currently embroiled in turmoil following a plot by some lawmakers to unseat the Speaker. These dissenting lawmakers have not been able to secure the constitutional backing of 49 out of 73 members, to enable them to initiate the removal process. Instead of adhering to the Speaker’s authority until they reach the necessary number, they have opted to hold separate sessions, which some view as a violation of the Constitution.
Additionally, the administration of President Joe Boakai appears to be showing signs of support for the rebellion against Speaker Koffa, further complicating the political landscape within the House.
