Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s recent request to delay the presentation of the National Budget has ignited a firestorm of controversy, particularly among political pundits who see this move as a strategic maneuver against House Speaker Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa. Sources close to the situation suggest that the delay is part of a broader scheme to undermine Koffa’s leadership and support a faction of lawmakers seeking to oust him.

In a letter dated October 29, 2024, addressed to Speaker Koffa, seen by this medium,  President Boakai stated that the Ministry of Finance required additional time to finalize technical and economic assumptions for the revenue forecast. The original deadline for the budget presentation was set for October 31, 2024.

This request comes at a time when tensions are running high within the House of Representatives, where approximately 40 members have openly expressed their opposition to Speaker Koffa’s leadership.

These dissenting lawmakers have been holding separate meetings away from Koffa’s oversight, strategizing to remove him from his position. However, they have yet to gather the necessary support, as they require a total of 49 votes to successfully oust the embattled speaker.

Critics argue that President Boakai’s decision to postpone the budget presentation is a calculated effort to empower the rebellious faction, giving them more time to rally support against Koffa. “By extending the timeline for the budget, the President is indirectly bolstering the so-called majority group’s chances of success,” said a source familiar with the ongoing political dynamics.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the Capitol, where the implications of this political maneuvering could significantly impact the legislative landscape and the stability of Koffa’s leadership. The coming weeks will be crucial as lawmakers navigate these turbulent waters, with the future of the House Speaker hanging in the balance.
