In a significant development within Liberia’s political landscape, Musa Hassan Bility has announced his resignation as the National Chairman of the opposition Liberty Party (LP). This decision comes in the wake of a tumultuous period for the party, which was originally founded by the late Cllr. Charles Brumskine.
The Liberty Party has faced severe fragmentation leading up to the recent presidential election, with factions emerging within its ranks. A segment led by Nyonblee Karngar opted to support the Unity Party of Joseph Boakai, while another faction, headed by Bility, backed the Alternative National Congress of Mr Alexander Cummings. This division has ultimately resulted in the dissolution of what was once a vibrant political entity, leaving Bility in a precarious position as he now leads a splintered party.
In his resignation letter, Bility expressed a mix of pride and sorrow regarding his tenure, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that I today announce my resignation as National Chairman of the Liberty Party and withdraw my membership from LP.” He reflected on the past three and a half years as a time filled with both achievements and challenges, particularly highlighting the amendments made to the party’s constitution that fostered inclusive decision-making.
Bility noted the highs and lows experienced during his leadership, including the party’s participation in the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) during the 2023 elections and the subsequent internal conflicts that arose from these changes. He emphasized the importance of reconciliation within the party, acknowledging that significant concessions were necessary for moving forward. However, he also expressed his inability to support the new direction being proposed, which conflicted with his core beliefs about the party’s future.
“My continued contributions to charting a pathway to the Liberia we all aspire to have will be more effectively carried out through different and non-traditional mediums,” Bility stated, indicating his intention to focus on his role as Representative for Nimba County District Number 8.
As Bility steps down, he extends his best wishes to the Liberty Party, hoping it can navigate its current challenges and work towards a successful future. His resignation marks a pivotal moment for the party as it seeks to redefine its identity in a fractured political landscape.
Musa Hassan Bility’s departure from the Liberty Party signals not only the complexities of political dynamics in Liberia but also the ongoing struggle for unity within the opposition.
