Today, we gather to pay tribute to a remarkable individual, a professional colleague, and a senior brother whose departure from this world has left an immense void in our hearts. Joel Cholo Brooks was not only a pioneer but also a trailblazer in the field of journalism in Liberia. As one of the first young Liberian journalists to own a newspaper, Monrovia Weekend, he paved the way for countless others to follow in his footsteps.
Through his weekly paper, Cholo empowered and uplifted the lives of many young Liberians. He not only provided them with employment opportunities but also took the time to train and nurture their talents. His dedication and commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists were unparalleled. Cholo’s exceptional professional performance caught the attention of the BBC, where he served as a reporter for several years. His relentless work ethic and unwavering passion for journalism were evident in every story he covered.
In addition to his accomplishments, Cholo went on to establish and finance the GNN newspaper and website, which he tirelessly operated until his untimely departure. Despite facing personal struggles, such as his battle with sugar, Cholo never wavered. He remained a role model, a beacon of light in the darkness, and a shining example of good citizenship.
Cholo’s unwavering determination and perseverance were truly admirable. He never gave up on his dreams and aspirations, always striving to achieve greatness. His indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to his craft serve as an inspiration to us all.
Today, as we bid farewell to our dear brother Cholo, we mourn the loss of a true icon in the Liberian media landscape. His legacy will forever be etched in our hearts and minds. The impact he made on the lives of those he mentored and the wider community will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Brother Cholo, we miss you deeply, and we are grateful for the indelible mark you have left on our lives. May you find eternal peace and rest in the embrace of our Creator. Your memory will forever be cherished, and your light will continue to guide us as we carry on your legacy.
Rest in perfect peace, dear Cholo.
